In Ayurveda, how you begin your morning shapes the entire arc of your day. The classical morning regimen — Dinacharya — is a sequence of simple, intentional practices that cleanse the body, calm the mind, and attune your biological rhythms to the natural cycles of the day.
Rise Before the Sun
Ayurveda recommends waking during Brahma Muhurta — the auspicious pre-dawn period roughly 90 minutes before sunrise. The atmosphere is calm, the mind is clear, and the Vata energy of the early morning supports creativity, meditation, and clear thinking.
The Core Morning Sequence
- Scrape your tongue with a copper or stainless-steel tongue scraper to remove overnight toxins (ama)
- Drink two glasses of warm water to stimulate agni (digestive fire) and encourage elimination
- Apply warm sesame oil to the body (Abhyanga) and massage for 10–15 minutes before bathing
- Practice 15–30 minutes of yoga, pranayama, or gentle movement
- Sit for meditation or quiet reflection for at least 10 minutes
Oil Pulling (Kavala Graha)
Swish one tablespoon of cold-pressed sesame or coconut oil in your mouth for 10–15 minutes, then spit it out (not in the sink — the drain can clog). This ancient practice draws bacteria, toxins, and metabolic waste from the oral cavity, leaving teeth and gums healthier and the mind clearer.
"The person who follows the daily regimen lives for a hundred years free from disease." — Ashtanga Hridayam
Consistency Over Perfection
You do not need to adopt the entire Dinacharya at once. Begin with tongue scraping and warm water. When that becomes effortless, add Abhyanga. Layer practice upon practice. Ayurveda is a lifelong exploration, not a 30-day programme.
