Triphala is one of Ayurveda's best-known formulas. This traditional combination of three fruits — Amalaki (Indian gooseberry), Bibhitaki, and Haritaki — has long been used in digestive and cleansing routines.
The Three Fruits
Amalaki (Emblica officinalis) is one of the richest natural sources of vitamin C and antioxidants. It nourishes and rebuilds tissues, cools Pitta, and tonifies the liver. In Ayurveda it is considered a Rasayana — a substance that promotes longevity and rejuvenation.
Bibhitaki (Terminalia bellirica) is the most astringent of the three. It reduces Kapha and is particularly beneficial for the respiratory system, loosening mucus and clearing the lungs. It also supports healthy blood lipid levels.
Haritaki (Terminalia chebula) is called the king of medicines in Tibetan and Ayurvedic traditions. Unusually, it balances all three doshas. It is a gentle laxative, nervine tonic, and rejuvenator of the entire digestive tract.
Why Triphala Works
The combination of these three fruits contains all six Ayurvedic tastes except salty. In Ayurveda, that breadth is one reason Triphala is considered a versatile digestive support formula.
How to Use Triphala
- Take half a teaspoon of Triphala powder in warm water at night before bed
- For a stronger cleansing effect, soak overnight and drink the water in the morning
- Triphala eye wash (strained overnight soak) is traditional for eye health and clarity
Classical texts praise Triphala highly, but modern use should still be individualized and cautious.
Start with a small dose and build gradually. People who are pregnant, taking medication, or managing a health condition should ask a qualified professional before using it regularly.
