At the heart of Ayurvedic philosophy is a brilliant concept: no two people are the same, and therefore no two people should be treated the same. The three doshas — Vata, Pitta, and Kapha — are bio-energetic forces derived from the five classical elements. Every person is born with a unique combination of these forces, called their Prakriti, or constitutional nature.
Vata: The Energy of Movement
Vata is composed of space and air. It governs all movement in the body — from the pulsation of the heart to the firing of neurons to the movement of food through the digestive tract. Vata types tend to be:
- Thin, light build with prominent joints
- Quick-minded, creative, and enthusiastic
- Prone to anxiety, dry skin, and constipation when imbalanced
Vata is balanced by: warmth, routine, grounding foods, oil massage, and early bedtimes.
Pitta: The Energy of Transformation
Pitta is composed of fire and water. It governs metabolism, digestion, and transformation — the conversion of food to energy, experience to knowledge, and desire to action. Pitta types tend to be:
- Medium build, sharp features, warm body temperature
- Intelligent, focused, driven, and articulate
- Prone to inflammation, acid reflux, and irritability when imbalanced
Pitta is balanced by: cooling foods, moderate exercise, time in nature, and avoiding overwork.
Kapha: The Energy of Structure
Kapha is composed of earth and water. It provides the body's structure, lubrication, and stability. Kapha types tend to be:
- Heavier build, smooth skin, calm disposition
- Loyal, patient, nurturing, and methodical
- Prone to weight gain, congestion, and lethargy when imbalanced
Kapha is balanced by: light and spicy foods, vigorous exercise, variety, and stimulating activities.

Finding Your Prakriti
While online quizzes can give a general indication, the most accurate assessment of your Prakriti comes from a trained Ayurvedic practitioner, who examines pulse, tongue, eyes, skin, and many other factors. Think of it as your wellness baseline — the starting point for every dietary and lifestyle recommendation.
